Patagonia 2022

Writer's picture: AlexAlex

on Friday 18. November we startet our amazing trip to Patagonia (South America).

I got the day off and prepared everything in my apartment to be gone for 6 weeks.

backpack and everything I had packed already the day before. at around 4pm Julian from work came by and took me to the Airport. Janina arrived a few minutes later. we walked to the checkin and queued for the baggage drop. unfortunately we had a problem with the checkin so we needed to go to a other counter to get our right boarding passes.

after the security check we walked to our gate B45 where our LATAM Boeing 777 was already waiting for us. due to our long checkin we didn't need to wait long until boarding begun. with roughly 45 minutes delay we took off at 20:45pm in the cold Frankfurt night sky out of Runway 18 heading south.

after a circa 10 hours night flight above the south Atlantic and Brazil we arrived at 0500 am on time in São Paulo. 3 hours time to change the plane was plenty enough and at 0700 am we took off for our second flight to Santiago de Chile. we had a smooth flight above the Andes Mountains and arrived at 1100 am in Sunny and hot (35C) Santiago.

after a very long queue for the immigration we got our backpacks and took some clothes off due to the head. we found a nice and friendly chilean cabdriver who brought us to our hostel in the City. thankfully our room was already ready when we arrived.

after relaxing for a bit we went to a big shopping mal close the the hostel to find some food and a SIM card for your phones. it was massive shopping Mal and super busy due to Saturday afternoon.

we had some simple fast-food (wraps and a burger).

at 1900pm lokal time we took a shower and had early bad time after two long flights and a very long day.

after a long (12 hours sleep) warm night we had a basic breakfast and walked to the shopping Mal we bought some SIM cards for the phones (50gb data for 8€) and withdraw some money from the ATM. there after we took the Subway into the city Center. where we did a free walking tour trough the center of Santiago with lots of information about the History and all the important places. due to the head we went afterwards to the hostel to have a bit of rest. in the evening we walked to the shopping Mal again to have dinner. we didn't went back into town because they sad Santiago is not too save at night but the area where we stayed was save.

the next morning Janina and I took the Subway again into the city to go on a small mountain. we had to take a bus to get to the top. from there we had a stunning few over Santiago and the Andes next to us. again blue sky and 35C. we tried some local Food/drink what was pretty good. we walked trough the Bella vista neighborhood with lots of restaurants, shops and bars. we returned early to the Hostel to shower and pack our backpacks. we look in some guidebooks from Chile and Argentina to plant our next weeks. again early bed time. our taxi will pick us up at 3am to the Airport.

our day started again super early at 2:30 am in the morning. we took a Taxi to the Airport and flew 4 hours to Punta Arenas down south in Chile. we flew with Skyairline (low-cost) what was a bit challenging because everything was only in Spanish. but what should I say we made it to Punta Arenas and had a beautiful flight above the Andes into the Sunrise. after the arrival the lovely woman from the Condor camper company picked us up with the van and drove us to a grocery store. here we got a proper introduction into the van before she left and we went to our first big food store. we walked around the store for at least one hour to find everything we needed and what we thought might be helpful on the trip.

there after we drove our first few km. we stopped for some flamingos on the way to the shoreline where we had Breakfast/Lunch. it was quite windy in Punta Arenas but the woman from Condor Campers told us its all year around like this and its gets even more windy...

than our road trip started! we started to drive towards Ushuaia. we crossed a beautiful empty scenery. after our first couple of kilometers we arrived at the Strait of Magellan ferry. it was so windy that the ferry drove sideways to the other side. 30 minutes later we continued driving to a penguin station what was unfortunately closed. shortly after the ferry we had our first refueling stop. in Chile you just stop at the gas station and some will fill up your car. what is pretty nice. the last 15km were on gravel road so badly we had to drive maximum of 40km/h. we decided to stay the night there because our day was so long that we where tired. after dinner we went into bed. we been so far down south its stays bright quite a long time after sunset and before sunrise even if the sunset is at around 2130 pm and sunrise at 0500 am.

after a long but more sleepless night we woke up and made us breakfast. the first night in the van was pretty cold and extreme windy. I am sure we had more than 100km/h wind during the night and we had no protection of the wind. the van waggled the whole night. but at least in the morning the wind sedated a bit and the sun was out.

we enjoyed our breakfast in the cold van with view to the ocean.

first time for us to cross the border to Argentina with the van. no could speak English but with a bit of help from a translator app the friendly police officer let us pass.

against all information we crossed the border quick and without any problems.

we drove the day further south with a couple of stops for the stunning scenery and refueling. at a small lake we stopped for a short midday nap. I was so tired due to jet lag and our short night that we had to stop. after 1 hour we continued our drive trough Tierra del Fuego (Ireland). in the mountain range close to Ushuaia we found a quiet spot for our second night. right before we went to bed it started snowing and we where a bit scared that we would not be able to drive out in the morning but we took the risk. in was pretty cold already in the evening.

23.11.2023

After a very cold night with approximately minus 2-3C we woke up with a stunning few into the mountains. we had a bit snow and ice on the car and on the ground but we made it out of our spot. we arrived early in Ushuaia. unfortunately a AIDA ship just came into the harbor and the city was super busy. we fund a parking spot and walked around the "city center" made some grocery and withdraw some Argentine peso from a special online bank. because of the extreme inflation of the money in Argentina its loosing worth daily. but with this bank we got much more money out. still not sure how that worked...after that we enjoyed a bit the sun and cold temperature at the sea. later at early afternoon we had lunch at a small cafe and watch one of the football World Cup matches. in the afternoon we drove uphill to have our first walk(2 hours). we had a nice few over Ushuaia and the bay short before sunset. we slept in the parking lot of a small cafe on this mountain.

after this night we realized that the next nights are getting cold too. because we are so far south that the average temperature in Summer in Ushuaia is 12C. we went into a small souvenir shop and bought a fridge magnet. there after we we drove in the National Park Tierra del Fuego. we parked on a official campground and did our first big hike (10km) our destination was the most southerly Post-office in the World. we had a short break and wrote some postcards in the small but very hot cabin (Post-office) before we returned the same way back to the van. this time we saw one of the Trains that runs in the national park mostly for tourists. after dinner we had another short walk to a small waterfall where we saw wild horses. its just so beautiful and peaceful in the area.

during the night some wild horses walked around the van. it was again a sunny day and thankfully our first "warm" day. we had breakfast for the first time outside at the river. we watched some birds and enjoyed the silence. a fox stopped by but left quickly when we moved.

Here at one of the most southern Points of the World i asked Janina to Marry me!

she didn't really believed it but she said yes. :)

from here it was a short walk to one of the most southern point of the world where you can go by car and on a "easy way". if you wanna go further south you have to cross the beagle channel.

at around midday we headed back to Ushuaia where we took our first shower after 3 days at a gas station. from there we only drove a short ways to a rive with a big official camping area. we enjoyed the sun and relaxed a bit.

this day was a driving only day... we started early in the morning forwards the straight of Magellan ferry. had our first refueling in Rio Grande and the second at the border to Chile.

again a simple and easy crossing back into Chile even the Chilean police had a short look into the van for forbidden food, drugs etc. after another windy crossing on the Magellan street we drove until half way to Puerto Natales. we found a parking spot next to the road where we stayed the night after more than 600km.

it is our hardest day of all... we had to start super early because its so hard and long the day that the ranger don't let you leave the camp after 7 am. the rest that you don't make it in time to the next camp is to big...

we had a alarm go off at 05:00 am quick warm soup after a freezing cold night. its was still raining so we packed again the tent wet in the back what it make it much heavier...

06:30 am and we are on the way uphill. 600m steep walking to the Mountain pass. on the way the rain changed into Snow. the wind got stronger with every meter we approached the pass. on top we presents us Chile with the must stunning and incredible view over the Gray glacier. ice until the horizon. epic! we continued pretty steep downhill at least the weather changed to Sunny with some clouds and wind. the trail is so steep and sometimes wet that Janina fall three times. we walked along the glacier towards the lake. on the way we had to cross some big swing bridges what was a bit scary. we started to more and more breaks because we where so exhausted from the hike. finally at around 15:00 pm we reached our camp. it one of the first camps for the W Track what means int much bigger and more busy than the other we been to so far. first thing we set our tent up to let it dry and got off our shoes. after a hot shower we went to the restaurant of this camp and had some burgers, Pizza and beer. absolutely needed after this day. late this evening we had some moor beer with some friends we made on the way. from here the group is going different ways or different days (waking further in one day than we do).

Pucon is the Action / Adventure City of Chile. so we quickly took off and stopped again in Villarrica for groceries. A 160km drive to the Nationalpark Conguillío. you are not allowed to stay in the National Park so we stopped right before the national Park next to the street in a small Forrest where we stayed the night. Wraps and beer for dinner.

the alarm was set early to be the first in the National Park to hike the Sierra Nevada track. to get there we have to cross the Lava field from the Llaima Vulcan one of the most active one's in Chile. Last eruption was in 2010 and it is supposed to erupt any time soon again. the street over the Lava field looks like from a different world. we felt like be on the Moon. it was a hot and Sunny day the view along the horizon was stunning. the area is covert with Vulcan's.

we finished the track at 1pm and started our last big part driving. around 400km later we arrived at Marcello and Catalina house in chillan. we went to a restaurant and had some beers and Pizza for dinner. we slept in the house the night and realized that our last night in the van has been yesterday...

After the Breakfast we packed our backpacks our Taxi service to the Airport arrived later than booked and even got stuck in the traffic so that we arrived very late at the Airport. Nobody wanted to speak with us in English so it was bit difficult to do the check-in. but we just made it in time to the Gate. we had a few minutes left because our flight was delayed and we spent our last cash fore some magnetos and drinks. just before we entered Janina realized she forgot her phone in the waiting area at the gate and went back to get it luckily just in time... it was a smooth flight to Sao Paulo where we had quiet some time to change. tired and exhausted we boarded our last flight back to Frankfurt. only unpleasant thing we had to wear a mask due to Covid... Again.....

Patagonia is just a truly magical Landscape. you can see the rough weather that is most of the time dominating in this part of the Word. but People and animals got adapted.

we experienced all 4 seasons on one days sometimes. But it was truly a one's a lifetime trip. and can be recommend from us.
