Azores 2024

in Summer 2024 we flew to the Azores and had 1 week on the Island of Pico and one of the Island of Sao Miguel
We woke up early and left the apartment at 08:00 am. We walked to the Station where we took the Subway to Mannheim. Due to construction on the Railway we had to take a Bus to the Frankfurt Airport which took us about one hour. After a quick check in we took off to Lisbon with only a 20 minutes delay. We arrived on time. We had around 4 hours, which was quite long. We had expensive burgers at the Terminal before we took the next plane to Sao Miguel. We had a cheap Hostel around the Airport due to a short stay. With the Taxi it took us only a few minutes to arrive. It was quite hot and humid. We opened the window of the room but unfortunately there was a bar right below our room. We finally went to bed by 23:30 pm.

our alarm went off at 05:30 am. due to the noise we had a pretty short night.. At the airport we got bad news, our plane had some technical issues that needed to be fixed before the flight that we took off one hour later than scheduled. At the end the old Dash 8 performed pretty well. It was a short 45 minute flight to Pico, our final destination. After getting our rental car we stopped in Madalena and had a delicious Breakfast in a small coffee shop. The weather was sunny and warm. After breakfast we stopped at the grocery shop and headed off to our Air BnB. We regained some sleep, chilled at the Pool and played games. We enjoyed dinner at sunset outside the house.early night for us.

We slept long and had our breakfast outside in the sun. Thereafter we drove back to Madalena where we looked around the town and had even another breakfast. beautiful small village. From here we drove into the Mountains where we went up in the clouds. saw some lakes and a beautiful green landscape. On the way back we stopped at the ferry terminal and bought tickets to Faial for Sunday. Another stop at the grocery store and we drove home. The rest of the day we relaxed at the pool and later in the Jacuzzi.

20-30C and Sun, Clouds and a little Rain.
Again, it was sunny in the morning so we had breakfast outside. We drove to a volcanic cave west of the island but unfortunately it was closed due to the risk of rockfall. but they showed us a movie of the cave and the volcanic activities around the Azores. after they showed us the entrance of the cave. From here we drove to the north side of the island where we stopped at a small lake and walked 4km to a viewing point. It was super hot and sunny.
end of the day we had some snacks and relaxed at the pool. Shower, dinner and bed time.

Breakfast as usual in front of our apartment in the sun. This day we drove to a small town on the south side where we went on a 2 hour Kayak tour in a crater bay. At the end we snorkel for some time on the shore line in clear water. We stopped at a cafe for some midday breakfast because we were hungry after the exhausting morning. From here we drove a bit around the island and enjoyed some nice mountain views. At the end we had dinner at the airbnb and got ready for the hike on the next day.

30-36C Sunny blue Sky
We woke up at 05:00am and drove up to Pico. We left the car at approximately 1300m above sea level. At 07:00am we started our hike up to the top of Pico. It was a very steep and hard walk up to the top. 3,8km and 3 hours and 30minuteslater we arrived at the top where we had a stunning view. We had a short break, had lunch and took some pictures. another 3 hours steep downhill. On the way it became cloudy and sometimes it was cold, humid and the view was less than 50m. Back at the car we were super exhausted. A short drive back to the apartment and the first thing we showered after that day. early dinner and finally some relaxing time at the Jacuzzi. A beautiful night with lots of stars.

After breakfast we drove to Madelena, walked around town and went to a wine museum.
short grocery stop and back to the Apartment. We relaxed the rest of the day at the pool, played some games and went into the Jacuzzi. At the end of the day we prepared everything for the next day's trip.

25-31 C cloudy and bit wind
We woke up early again and drove to the ferry in Madlena, at08:00am we drove off with the small ferry to Horta. After we arrived we had breakfast at the beautiful Harbor of Horta. The sun was out and we drove up the mountain to see the massive candela of Horta. A short walk and enjoyed the view from up here for a bit and continued our drive around the island. On the way we stopped at a car park in the forest where I fell asleep for a bit. Later we reached the lighthouse on the west side. at the lighthouse was a museum that we visited. We learned a lot about the Azores and the volcanic activity in the past. We drove further around the island and visited an old, lost church and lighthouse. Back in town we had dinner at the restaurant at the sea where we had burgers and beer. At 22:00 pm we took the ferry back to Pico. At home we enjoyed the Jacuzzi below a clear sky full of stars.

We started the day with packing. We had to say goodbye to our nice and small Airbnb.
We enjoyed a delicious breakfast in Madelena before we drove to the airport. Our flight got delayed by 1 hour which was a bit annoying since the airport is super small. After a 1 hour flight with an old ATR72 we arrived at Sao Miguel, the main island of the Azores. They gave us a tiny rental car where we just fitted our backpacks in… after around 45 minutes of driving we arrived at our new accommodation. a shared house where we had a room. it was okay, they had two big dogs living in the driveway which was a bit smelly… a short walk to the grocery store and early night time.

A long breakfast in the garden and afterwards we drove to a tree plantation where we looked around. The next stop was the Ananas plantage in Ponta del Gada. We saw little Ananas and some big ones. The rest of the day we walked around the town of Ponta del Gada.
The rest of the day we relaxed at home and had dinner in bed.

After breakfast we drove around one hour to the North of the Island. Here we started a long hike around the crater. at the carpark was an old abandoned Hotel that looked over the mountain. We walked around 13 km at the crater border and in the middle of the crater. a long lunch break at the lake with some cold drinks. From here we tried to walk back up to the car but we missed the right turn. We ended up on a very sandy and steep part where we nearly died at one point we walked back for some time until we found the right way. It was super hot and when we finally made it back to the car we were super happy. We drove to a small place and bought some fries. On our way back home we stayed for some time at the airport for some plane spotting. Back home we walked along the promenade at the shoreline and watched a beautiful sunset.

I woke up and didn't felt good. we went to the drugshop and bought some medicine. The rest of the day we stayed in bed, watched some netflix and tried to relax. In the evening we walked along the promenade and had dinner in a restaurant next to the ocean. here we had delicious food and watched the sunset.

After breakfast we drove to an old church on the south side of the island. It was a very tiny church with beautiful long steps in front. The next stop was another church on a lake, where we walked for a bit along the lake. A short drive later we stopped at some active krater activity, where some hot gas came out of the ground. On our way back we stopped at a cafe where we had lunch in a tiny town. At the end of the day we stopped at both tea plants where we tasted some tea and watched a movie about how they produce the tea.

28 C Sunn with some clouds
On our last day on the Azores we drove up the big Crater on Ponta del Gada. Unfortunately we couldn't drive up to the carpark because it was quite busy. We had to take a bus to the top where we enjoyed some time with the stunning view. back at the carpark we had lunch from a burger food truck which was surprisingly delicious. because we didn’t know what else to do we stopped again at the airport for some planespotting. At the end of the day we packed our backpacks and got ready for the flight back. early night.

25-29 C Sun and clouds
We woke up at 05:00 am and drove to the Airport. With a few minutes delay we flew directly back to Frankfurt. unfortunately i booked a window seat without a window… What was super annoying for me… back in Frankfurt we had to wait quite some time for our backpacks, which is usually for Frankfurt. We took the train back home and went to our favorite Italian restaurant for Dinner.
The First week on Pico Island was super nice and Beautiful, the second week was loud, busy and okey. still i would return back to the Azores, lots of flowers and beautiful landscape.
